Musher’s Camp

Do I get to drive the sled?
No one knows the dogs like their mushers, for this reason, passengers are not allowed to drive the sled. Driving the sled, as well as keeping the dogs in line, takes skills and knowledge that is only acquired through experience.
How long is the sled ride? Is it bumpy?
The sled ride is about a mile long. Sometimes, the ride can be a little bumpy, but our guides are usually able to avoid the bumps well enough. The speed, as well as the exact timing, of the ride is dependent upon both the dogs’ performance as well as the weather on the day of your visit. So, there is truly no way for us to say exactly how fast the sled will go on any given run.
How long is this excursion, and is transportation to and from your camp included?
All of our excursions include transportation to and from the cruise ship dock. In Juneau, the entire excursion (dock to dock) is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The excursion in Skagway (dock to dock) is 3 hours and 15 minutes.
How many dogs will pull the sled?
You will need to hang on to your seat because the sled will be pulled by a powerful team of 14 to 16 dogs!
How many people fit on a sled at once?
Six guests, plus the musher, go together on the sled. We normally run more than one sled at a time, so we can easily accommodate larger groups.
Is the sled ride on snow?
In both Skagway and Juneau, our excursion takes place on the ground, in the woods, and we use a customized summertime wheeled sled. Our summertime sleds are a great way to experience mushing without the cold temperatures and heavy snow of wintertime Alaska.
Is there a weight limit on dog sledding?
There is no weight limit for guests visiting our musher’s camps.
Is this excursion suitable for guests of all ages?
Yes. We have guests of all ages, ranging from infancy to elderly, enjoy our camps.
What times are the departures?
The departure times for all of our excursions vary by the day. Please contact either your ship or us directly for available departure times.

Visiting Alaska

May I drive right to your camp?
For the safety of both our guests and animals, all visitors must be accompanied by a tour guide before entering our camps. Please call our office for more information as to how this may be arranged.
What is the weather like?
The temperature in Southeast Alaska in the summer is usually an average of 60oF. As the whole area is in a temperate rainforest, it tends to rain often, especially in Juneau. To get an idea of what kind of weather you can expect during your stay you may want to check out an internet weather site for a forecast.
