"J" Shelley

Shelley, 32, is from Charleston, SC. He has been riding horses since age 11. Shelley’s family owned a horse, named Chip of Gold, so he was able to ride all the time while growing up. He also gained additional experience working with horses while working on Ted Turner’s farm, in Atlanta, for seven years. One of Shelley’s fondest horse “tales” is Chip of Gold was deathly afraid of butterflies. Shelley thought it was the funniest thing to see a big animal be so scared of something so harmless and tiny.   Shelley loves riding horses because he enjoys the idea of each horse having his or her own personality. He finds his job to be rewarding because it provides him with the opportunity to interact with tourists and enjoy the beauty of Dyea on a daily basis. When Shelley is not riding horses, he thoroughly enjoys music, sleeping, and cooking.
